Day -3 🧵 : A Handy Template. Let’s prepare for AoC with some warm up! How about sharing code templates we’re using this year?

So cool to see the YT streams! I am planning on doing some live streaming on Twitch (link in 🧵) for AOC 2022 in Kotlin. I am focusing on parser combinators (w/ konbini) and coroutines/flows for parallelization. No idea how far I'll get, but it sounds fun!

I found JB AoK template a bit too bare-bones so I've made my own. What's different? • Runs on junit testing infrastructure so that you can run each individual day/part from both, IDE and CLI • All days are preconfigured for you along with input file placeholders, readers and places to drop your solutions for part 1 & 2 • Automatic safeguards and easy cleanup mechanism to avoid committing input contents

If we are sharing templates, here is mine. • All days ready made with placeholders and input reading, timing the solutions, printing the input and output, etc. • Puts the output in your clipboard to save you the precious second of copying it. 😄 • Includes a bunch of geometry and math code that I found myself repeatedly writing in previous years, like classes for points, directions, grids, functions for manipulating them, useful extensions. • The actual solution files are as minimal as possible with no classes, overrides.

Just wanted to put out a reminder that not everybody in the world can do these solutions the moment they drop and in years past we’ve discussed daily solutions on a thread to avoid spoilers Example: ⚠️ Day X - Discussion Thread ⚠️

BTW, a wonderful and productive way to solve the AoC puzzles is using Kotlin Notebooks in JetBrains Datalore. Kotlin kernel is available there out of the box. Some info and docs about Kotlin Kernel could be found here

👋 I’m Caleb. I live in Maryland 🇺🇸 and work in Application Security. I am looking forward to participating Advent of Code 🎅 once again and learning more idiomatic Kotlin from y’all experts - thank you! However, also this year, I have a newborn daughter (3 weeks old!) so my completion time may correspond to how much sleep and/or free time I am getting! :man_feeding_baby:😴

I'm trying to write a template generator that, among other things, grabs the input from the website when it's available. I'm terrible at IO, and have never done any web scraping at all. I'm trying to follow Java StackExchange tips but my efforts result in a 400 Bad Request code. Eric said that he'd be blocking people who don't change their User Agent property but I'm getting the error even before I set the property. I'm clearly in over my head. Does anyone use such a thing, and if so can I look at your repo?

So, I started this years AoC journey in a very productive way. Also writing a changelog where I keep track of the tasks I solve. The first entry says 'Added really pointless, silly snow animation without solving any task' xD (I will be actually solving the tasks over the WE, but AoC is learning time, and it was compose learning time. :P) (Code is here: https://github.com/dragetd/advent-of-code_2022)
