Looks like a bug.

I saw Java 9 mention in Kotlin 1.1 beta blog post, but Kotlin toolchain seems not able to compile on Java 9 yet. Is it something you plan to fix before 1.1 GA ? cf. https://youtrack.jetbrains.com/issue/KT-14988)

@sdeleuze unfortunately not, because this requires updating the underlying IJ Platform version which is too risky at this point, but we plan to do this in one of the first 1.1.x updates

Not sure if this is something already discussed here. I am getting the following error with the latest beta.

functions don’t require wrappers for async calls at all, because you can call them without blocking TL;DR Coroutines itself don't require java 8, but some implementation do

@jw kotlinx.coroutines have a sample for only Retrofit + Observable But implement Retrofit Call await extensions is good idea! I have some experimental implementation in my sample project, just as proof of concept
