Hey Everyone, I had a look at the project ideas and I am particularly very interested in the project Groovy to Kotlin Gradle DSL Converter. This plugin is very useful cause the pain point that this plugin is gonna address is real and this will save a lot of time for developers( including me) around the world. I would love to work on this project as a GSoC mentee, I have a very basic knowledge of building intellij plugins( followed an article by freecodecamp once), good knowledge of Gradle and Groovy and I have been working with Kotlin for about 3 years now! Would love to discuss more about the plans for implementation(if we have any right now). Also, you can know more about me here

Hi everyone! I am also new to open source and have some summer internship experience of Android development with Kotlin at Audible. I got extremely interested in parameter forwarding project for the Kotlin IntelliJ Plugin and will submit a proposal for it when the applications are open. Meanwhile I’d love to ask for any recommendations on how to start working on open source projects. I will appreciate it a lot if you could share with me some resources or tips on how to get started, both with open source in general and Kotlin ecosystem specifically. I would also be more than happy to hop on a call and chat if anyone is able and willing to talk and think it is a good medium to share experience 🙂

Hello, I would like to participate in the project. I've learned and used Kotlin since 2019, and I have completed several projects, including web services (front and back ends), Minecraft modding, command-line programs, and desktop applications using Kotlin Multiplatform. I have been looking for Kotlin projects since the first year I learned about the GSoC. After reading the ideas listed on the introduction website, I believe that the idea of building a Groovy to Kotlin Gradle DSL Converter is extremely useful and important for the efficiency of Kotlin development. I am also interested in other project ideas, such as building Kotlin Multiplatform libraries and enhancing the kotlinx-benchmark library. I am new to open source, but I am passionate about it and would appreciate your guidance if possible.😊 My GitHub account: https://github.com/nicognaw

Hello everyone! I am an undergraduate university student majoring in computer science and I would love to contribute to the Kotlin community. I have been using Kotlin sporadically in a few of my JVM-related projects since 2019. I am interested in improving the compiler error messages, which I believe would be helpful for both beginners and experienced users alike. I am also interested in the idea of a Groovy-to-Kotlin DSL converter for Gradle build scripts, as I have some experience working with them in the past. Although I have contributed to open source before, I still consider myself relatively new to it. I am looking forward to discussing, learning, and growing along with everyone! 😄

Hello everyone 👋, My name is Divyansh and I am an Electronics undergraduate from India. Since my freshman year in college, which began in November 2020, I have been learning Android development and developing apps. Last year, I started my journey into open-source software development by participating in the Google Summer of Code 2022. During this time, I was mentored by the AnkiDroid organisation and worked on migrating the codebase from AsyncTask to Kotlin Coroutines as part of my GSoC project. Additionally, I also worked on migrating the remaining Java files to Kotlin. I am particularly interested in contributing to the "Improve support for parameter forwarding in the Kotlin Plugin" project. I typically use gradle.kts for my scripts and I love it. As correctly stated on the project's page, an example is, Jetpack Compose, which heavily relies on the composition pattern. Thus, better IDE support for it would be incredibly helpful to me as well as the entire community. I have been using Kotlin as my primary programming language for over two years and would relish the opportunity to build 🔨 something amazing that is useful to the community 😇 Divyansh Kushwaha https://github.com/divyanshdxn

Hi folks! I am Pankaj Khushalani, an engineering student in Information Technology discipline from VJTI, India. I was introduced to Kotlin from Google Developers’ Android Study Jams back in November 2020 and have been building Android projects using Kotlin ever since. As someone who has used both the Gradle script and Kotlin Gradle DSL, I have faced the pain to migrate Gradle scripts to the Kotlin DSL. I find the project idea really useful and would love to contribute to the “Groovy to Kotlin Gradle DSL Converter” GSoC project. Is there any task list available for the projects or a list of mentors?

Hello! I'm quite new to open source, but am very eager to learn and would love to contribute to the Groovy to Kotlin Gradle DSL Converter. I have used Kotlin for building production-grade backends so I'm quite familiar with the language and enjoy using it. I have quite an interest in parsers and compilers so I think this project would be a great opportunity for me to learn and apply this knowledge to solve a real-world problem. Like many others, I too have experienced wanting to use a Groovy DSL snippet of code in my
    build.gradle.kts
only to have to figure out the syntax differences in order to get it to work. Since there is quite an interest in the Groovy to Kotlin Gradle DSL Converter project, I would also be happy to contribute to one of the following projects: Kotlin Compiler error messages; Kotlin Multiplatform libraries; kotlinx-benchmark library API; Parallel stacks for Kotlin Coroutines in the debugger; support for parameter forwarding in the Kotlin Plugin; https://github.com/dawidl022

Hi everyone! I’m HyunWoo Lee, conputer engineering student in Konkuk University from South Korea. I’ve studied Kotlin and Android Development since 2020 and now I am currently working as an Android developer at a company called Mathpresso(making QANDA - AI Education Solution) to fulfill my mandatory military service. I’ve been interested in Compose and open source contribution. I contributed Android conference applications written in Compose and some open source projects. I am currently interested in Kotlin Mobile Multiplatform, so I am creating sample apps in my spare time. It’s fascinating to me that I can create apps for both platforms using my favorite language, Kotlin (some codes are written in Swift or Objective-C). I’d love to develop this wonderful tech, so that I’m interested in working on the Kotlin Multiplatform Libraries and making contributions for KMM developer ecosystem. Also I’d be happy to contribute Groovy to Kotlin Gradle DSL Converter project, since I’m using
    build.gradle.kts
and it’ll be useful for me and other developers using Kotlin DSL for gradle :) I would love to discuss for these implementations & projects. And you can see & know more about me here. Thanks & Regards HyunWoo Lee

Hey everyone 👋 I am Vaibhav Jaiswal, a Computer Science Engineering student at RCC Institute Of Information Technology, Kolkata, India. I am also working as a Software Engineer - Intern at Pratilipi I have been working on A*ndroid since 2020* and like working on Android a lot, which is my main domain. I have made many open-source projects and won a few international hackathons. I like Kotlin a lot, coming from a Java background, Kotlin made everything so simple for me. I have tried all domains using Kotlin, and I have made backends using Ktor, tried making a React app using Kotlin React and recently started to explore Kotlin Multi-platform and made a simple open source project on it too and on to make more. I am a lot into Kotlin Multi-platform development and I am very much interested in contributing to Kotlin Multi-platform Libraries. Apart from this, I am also interested in contributing to Gradle Groovy to Kotlin DSL Converted Plugin. Looking forward to connecting with mentors and discussing the project and implementation in detail. You can know more about me from my Linkedin and Github. Thanks, Vaibhav Jaiswal

It looks like there is a lot of interest in the Groovy -> Kotlin Gradle converter project! I shared this in a thread but figure it is useful for many here:
My own thoughts on the Gradle DSL converter are that it'd be cool to see if you can leverage OpenAI or some LLM with a corpus of GitHub projects that have done a
    build.gradle
    to
    build.gradle.kts
    migration.

Greetings James. Can you elaborate more on how exactly is leveraging any of OpenAI's possible or even practical. As far as I am aware most of OpenAI APIs are proprietary and paid(or only free upto a certain extent). OpenAI's capabilities are great and everything, but I believe the functionality of something like a converter shouldn't be dependent on any external entity and should happen totally offline. Am I missing something? I would love to know your thoughts on this. Thanks! :)
j

James Ward

03/07/2023, 5:58 PM
Yeah, those are good points and maybe it would have to be done manually without external dependencies.

n

03/09/2023, 4:22 AM
I agree that LLMs are powerful and fascinating, and I have personally developed several applications using the OpenAI API. However, I don't believe that we can rely solely on LLMs for all tasks, particularly for complex tasks such as building compilers. Explicit programming may be better suited for these types of tasks. While it may be acceptable to create a demo to demonstrate how LLMs can be used, it is unlikely that it will be accepted as a plugin for the proposed project.
