I wish I could produce more detail, but not understanding some things

In Gradle, there's this dependency that goes by

compile "com.badlogicgames.gdx:gdx-platform:$gdxVersion:natives-desktop"

they have this

:natives-desktop

as some suffix, which I'm unable to locate the corresponding maven repo only

<http://mvnrepository.com/artifact/com.badlogicgames.gdx/gdx-platform>

exists, must be something there in the pom.xml, but I'm not sure

It's a qualifier, rarely used

I don't see it in the repo either so far

Does it use some non standard repo?

yes but they're doing it in Gradle

The Gradle project refers to two repositories

repositories {
        mavenCentral()
        maven { url "<https://oss.sonatype.org/content/repositories/snapshots/>" }
    }

That's the kind of thing that should automatically work with 0.700+
