Welcome Filip, thanks for coming by 🙂

Hi 👋 I joined your Discord yesterday so I am glad I can have everything in one place now 😄
  • d

    David Herman

    02/27/2023, 6:13 PM
Yeah, we'll see how that goes. Definitely the Discord will still be good for a while because there's a few people in there who know the APIs well at this point, and it covers all time zones 🙂
  • d

    David Herman

    02/27/2023, 6:13 PM
Whereas here it's currently just me and I sleep a lot 😄
  • d

    David Herman

    02/27/2023, 6:15 PM
But definitely happy to answer questions when I'm around. Also curious to hear what people think about Kobweb, even if they try it and bounce off of it because it isn't what they expected or something they want isn't done yet.

    I can wait for a good answer/input 😉

    David Herman

    02/27/2023, 6:20 PM
Are you using Kobweb already? Or still just checking it out?
  • f

    Filip Wiesner

    02/27/2023, 6:20 PM
curious to hear what people think about Kobweb
Well, so far I haven't tried it out properly. I've been struggling whole day yesterday with deploying to Railway. After few hours I gave up, exported locally and used Surge. I would certainly appreciate some documentation about exporting/deploying a Kobweb site. I am still not sure what all the export parameters do or what the
    includeServer
    option does.
  • f

    Filip Wiesner

    02/27/2023, 6:21 PM
To be honest I am still lost because I am Android dev trying out web for the first time properly 😄
  • d

    David Herman

    02/27/2023, 6:21 PM
Sure, I'm focusing on documentation now. It will probably start coming out in a few weeks.
  • d

    David Herman

    02/27/2023, 6:22 PM
Note that when I started Kobweb, I designed it as a full stack solution, which it can be, but most users who joined wanted static layouts, so I've been focusing on that.
  • d

    David Herman

    02/27/2023, 6:22 PM
    I wrote a post about it: https://bitspittle.dev/blog/2022/staticdeploy
  • d

    David Herman

    02/27/2023, 6:23 PM
For a while I ran my own server using Google Cloud Run, but I found it expensive even when no one visited the site (~$15 / month). I've since moved to static hosting myself with Firebase and I get charged like 20c a month or so
  • d

    David Herman

    02/27/2023, 6:24 PM
    The
    includeServer
option basically adds a JVM project to your Kobweb application module. See the
    examples/todo
    example to see it working.
  • d

    David Herman

    02/27/2023, 6:25 PM
If you're using static hosting though you don't need it.
  • d

    David Herman

    02/27/2023, 6:25 PM
(AFK for a bit, wife is asking for some help)
  • f

    Filip Wiesner

    02/27/2023, 6:30 PM
I think I've just jumped straight into it expecting it to be really easy. I have some experience with static sites using React.js but that's it. So when I've tried Kobweb I immediately hit brick wall of technologies I don't know 😄 I'll read your article and come back with questions
  • f

    Filip Wiesner

    02/27/2023, 6:33 PM
But to give you some idea about my current hobby project. I have monorepo with backend written in Ktor, Android app, iOS app, one module shared across all platforms and one module shared for frontend. So I hope Kobweb will fill the "web frontend" part nicely.
  • d

    David Herman

    02/27/2023, 6:34 PM
Yeah, I definitely want to add codelabs to introduce the concepts of Kobweb incrementally.
  • d

    David Herman

    02/27/2023, 6:36 PM
Kobweb is a small crutch I think for Android devs, thanks to its own Modifier class and a few other classes copied over (kind of) from Jetpack Compose, but ultimately the developer still needs to learn JavaScript and CSS APIs.
  • d

    David Herman

    02/27/2023, 6:37 PM
Note that the blog article linked to above refers to https://bitspittle.dev/blog/2022/kotlinsite which could be a good skim.
  • f

    Filip Wiesner

    02/27/2023, 6:39 PM
I've come to terms with using CSS but I hope I won't have to touch JavaScript a lot 😅 Thanks for the articles 👍
  • d

    David Herman

    02/27/2023, 6:40 PM
Ah, no JS. You are always writing Kotlin. But the Kotlin is often a thin layer over JS code.
  • d

    David Herman

    02/27/2023, 6:41 PM
(This isn't Kobweb, btw, but Kotlin/JS itself. For example, you read https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/API/Window/location but use https://kotlinlang.org/api/latest/jvm/stdlib/org.w3c.dom/-window/location.html)
