i was just contacted by a user with a request that is prohably illegal/shady? he is asking me to create an upwork account that then should be used by him and his team in china. is there any process to report such users?

I’m not sure why I was told my question involving Kotlin coroutines is out-of-scope for #android, when other questions seemingly less related to Kotlin were uncriticized. Could someone help me understand what’s going on? I don’t want to be either a bad citizen or a wimp and could use help calibrating a response.

I’d like to suggest discouraging anonymity here in some formal capacity. These asymmetric engagements are a big part of me feeling mostly uninterested in this slack, as it completely derails the social aspect of it. Also can encourage noisy/spammy throwaways, alt accounts, etc. Especially as this is a formal space for many major projects where the maintainers themselves are not anonymizing themselves. Is it possible to get a janitor for the #android channel? The quality of posts plummeted in the last several months. People do not respect the purpose of that channel and ask general Android questions that are in no way associated with Kotlin. Such questions should be removed with warning. It may also be helpful to ask people with authority (Google employees active in that channel) to not dignify the irrelevant questions and instead redirect those questioners to search engines.

Is there any reason this workspace doesn't allow us to add custom emojis? I think it'd help unleash a little the good emotions and thoughts of this community, based on my experience on another Slack (that is less crowded but more active). I often myself wanting to show my reaction to something, but the standard emojis don't fit, and a message would be too much (drowns the rest of the discussion). If letting any member here feels risky because of how many people are registered, maybe it'd be possible to allow only a few active members to add emojis with some guidelines so all the emojis are safe for work (though such a policy can be set and apply even if anyone can add custom emojis).

You can put it in the channel description. You can put it in the CoC, you can put it in the agreement. It won’t matter. People read what they want.

I will say that I don’t really see repeat offenders. It’s more likely just new members posting off-topic, joining this Slack to try and get an answer quicker than they’d get on SO

I think you're missing the forest through the trees on a lot of those points, and mostly fall into the trap of arguing that any non-zero value somehow redeems all cost. In a signal-to-noise problem, you can't just argue on behalf of the (minuscule) signal.

Wild idea: Require all StackOverflow worthy questions to be asked on StackOverflow first, and have their link put there with a short snippet here that summarizes the question/issue.

Funny, that I didn't visit this slack for a while, but 7 months later the android problem is as relevant as ever. My humble 2 cents is that we're fighting people's nature with all the creative restrictions in attempt to harness the baddies, means it's probably going to fail. Maybe just let it be, #android as a general cloaca and #android-kotlin for the rest of elitists.

I would suggest restricting #general to be announcements-only since people cannot leave it

Are there rules against soliciting in this slack? I routinely get DM’d about things that are essentially business opportunities for someone else.
