i'm a little curious about the comment that it's to "sell more IntelliJ licenses", since there is still a community edition that supports kotlin isn't there?

assumption: people that already use the community edition will easier buy a license than people who never used intellij.

Which isn't a bad thing? Because then they're buying the product on its own merits? /sigh

i bought the license mostly for appcode and the .net stuff

complaining that the IntelliJ plugin is vastly superior to the Eclipse plugin.... maybe it's just that anything related to IntelliJ is vastly superior to anything related to Eclipse, but who am I to talk? 🙂

to be fair, jetbrains is way better at plugging intellij than eclipse 🙂

Personally for myself, I stick with plain old Java. It is a language I am used to and one I already know quite well.

TBH it is important to learn other languages, especially other JVM languages, if Java is used. you don't have to use them (e.g. Kotlin) but it is important to at least know these languages a bit.

Not everybody wants to become better at their job. It’s actually pretty rare.

It's an especially great plague in software, though, where a great many know far less than they think. Too easy to get in. But that's my craftsmanship cheerleader speaking up.

note that there have been breaking language changes that required new compiler versions

Python 3 has some major improvements, like unicode not being a complete disaster. But it doesn't go far enough for the rank and file who might not understand why python 2's unicode is a crime against programming.

There wasn't a shiny revamp of the stdlib or OO system or anything. They moved some stuff around, enough to break code, but not enough to be very awesome.
