    I guess that could always copy the data until the kind is ready in the worse case that it comes before the kind

    i am assuming your inpout is json and in kotlinx-serialization i am not aware of anything coming in as a stream

    in writeBegin i get a KOutput back.. does 
    readBegin(Thing.serialClassDesc)
    have a return value ? no IDE ready to look it up

    Probably reading it as a JsonObject may work as then, after we get the kind we can convert it into a KInput.

    Looking at the source code it does return a new 
    JsonInput
    so that may actually work. Cheers. I'll try tomorrow. Bed time now 😄

    what would be the best way to deserialise it from json? External annotations or creating a custom serialiser?

    I doubt it will work with external annotations, so creating a custom serializer is a single option
