wouldn’t static declarations at the top of the class solve the same issue or is this a language design feature that i’m mkissing

companion objects are statics basically .. just a different way to express it

afaik there is no static keyword, you can make stuff as JvmStatic i guess.. but everything in any kind of object is static

including functions and init code

static is flawed way of expressing instances whose lifetimes are independent of instances of a class. if Java had done it correctly, they would be instance members on

Class<T>

and you would be able to make class instances implement interfaces

then the concept of static would never be needed

that's what Kotlin is attempting to model, but of course it can't fully because it's still bound by the JDK and also it's attempting to be multiplatform

a companion object is the closest you get since it leverages the static lifetime which is effectively the same

e.g. you fields annotated as @NotNull can be set to null but will be nonnull after validation
