and wound up using that. But before I found out about radiomenuitem
I saw listmenu
and tried to make that work. I tried putting it under a menu
item in a menubar
but couldn't figure out how to make that work. It either never showed up or it showed up underneath some other menu. Obviously I don't know how to use the listmenu

creates a kind of "web 2.0" menu component, it has nothing to do with the menu system of JavaFX.
