I split my app init into two parts: the bare essentials to get up-and-running and a part containing long running operations, business logic, and data retrieval. The purpose is to get a window displayed on the screen as soon as possible and provide lots of feedback to the user. This avoids putting too much into a sequence that's hidden from the user who may question whether the app is really running. I do this by putting the essential init in start() like you mentioned. A put the longer-running stuff in an onShown() handler. Once the stage is displayed, then I have access to a progressbar and other controls that give feedback to the user. In TornadoFX, this is a TaskStatus class which is a data structure for several status-related items like a status message and progress indicator. This can be paired with controls say at the bottom of the screen. For cleanly closing the session, I follow a similar approach with the long-running saving done in an onHiding or Hidden method and the essentials done in a stop(). This is a primaryStage-oriented design. I think we're talking about adding something that's more general.

@runt9 I use everything from traditional EJB app clients, to RESTful web service-backed clients, to web sockets clients, to clients that just use the backend to save serialized data (ex, save an XML file as a CLOB).

@runt9 Let's say you have a model of the game rules + player capabilities + team capabilities + weather + randomness. You create a model. Your friend creates a model. You run the simulation for an entire game, play-by-play, allow for in-game adjustments in accordance with the rules (ex, no changing the weather). In a peer-to-peer system,one of you runs the game and transmits updates to the other. You'll do some kind of message passing to share the initial models, in-game adjustments, and display updates. When it comes time to save something, you'll have an object model that's the basis for the simulation. This can be saved in total in a format like JSON which will be very close to your object model. If you need to save something -- say the computer restarts -- you can save this as a file and optionally send it to your friend and/or the cloud. An RDMBS could be used to support the service registry which manages the accounts. This way the two game players can find each other.

The RDMBS might also help on the modeling side in organizing your rules.

I have a vbox, inside the vbox I have a scrollpane. The scrollpane has vgrow set to ALWAYS and fitToWidth = true. Now inside that scrollpane I have another vbox. How do I set the second vbox so that it take the whole height of scrollpane?

@amanda.hinchman-dominguez There is no new version of the plugin, I don't quite understand what you're trying to achieve with the plugin config? 🙂 You're just supposed to change your dependency in pom.xml to tornadofx-1.7.12-SNAPSHOT. For backend, I always use the Http/Rest client in TornadoFX and talk to an HTTP backend using JSON as the payload.

@amanda.hinchman-dominguez The error message is saying "Unresolved reference -> DataGridPaginator", so that means that the compiler can't find the file. That would happen if you compile against a version of TornadoFX prior to when I added the paginator. Can you try just

mvn clean compile

from the command line?

@anidotnet Maybe you can bind minWidth and minHeight of the vbox to the current width/height of the scroll pane?

complete noob question, but how do I make a label stretch in a hbox? I tried setting hgrow to Priority.ALWAYS but it has no effect…
