@carlw So what you were originally proposing was: The UI-thread, which also owns the controller. The controller spawns a long running thread, which handles my zeromq-traffic and stores it in some shared concurrent datastructure like a queue. Zeromq (jeromq) needs to be accessed from a single thread only. Then the controller also creates this scheduledservice(with a period of 0 and delay of 0), which accesses this shared DataStructure, and eventually starts to throw messages, if it can't draw fast enough...

@hestad runLater() won't spawn Threads. It builds up a list of pending Runnables. That list isn't executed at a particular time, so you might see undesirable behavior like a Task completing and then the UI updating. In this case, there are no intermediate results and the user is clueless about the operation until its over. For instance, you might call recv(0) ten times and follow each recv with a Runnable that updates the UI in a loop. Maybe you're even checking the canceled flag in between iterations. In that case the slow network recv makes the user wait but the first Runnable (and the 2nd and 3rd) don't get called until after you exit the call() of the Task. I find updateProgress() and updateMessage() to be reliable ways to keep the user updated of a long-running operation. I'm not sure on the implementation, but these can provide status. However, I don't think they're suitable in your case because you're not expecting progress or status but rather data back.

I believe that there will be a new Thread when each period comes due in the ScheduledService. I haven't looked at the JavaFX code, but it's probably up to the implementation to decide whether new Thread objects are created or pulled off of a pool.

The period setting is the minimum amount of time so this won't be suitable for a strict timing application. For example, if you were doing an electronic circuit simulation, this technique might produce some jerky results that appear to skip certain point.

You can specify your own Executor, which will put the user in control. So that's good.

Is possible to Application.launch by passing an object? And same with tornadofx's App(), can I pass it an object instead of a class? I want to create a test runner without injection nor mocking frameworks.

I noticed the by param() option, but I like constructors.

This is not with TornadoFX, but I use Guice and mocked objects. @ron has integrated Guice with TornadoFX. Guice is like a 670k JAR and it seems like it would cover the mocking / injection / parameterization scheme without extra code.

I'll try by first making an shallow example, to see if you guys can see some early flaws. When sorting an ObservableList inside an ObservableList the sortedList will stay empty, even if we add elements to the list.

@hestad i would put the data initialization calls in an onDock() rather than an init{}. That way, you can get feedback to the UI. Are you seeing a big pause from when your window comes up?

The window starts in fair time, and static components are drawn at once. But those lists are never drawn.
