@carlw i think i managed to solve most of my problems.. i can now use a ObservableList<T> and (T) -> Tab to create tabs when added to the list only problem i am facing is how to find tabs again to remove them.. i tried to write into

tag

but accessing it later crashes

Working with our intern today incorporating a Task w. custom progress into a file-loading operation; sample app breaks down the concept; runs quickly (my web server is fast!)

^ this example is different that the popular one from edvin in that the business method -- fetchWebPage -- returns a value. This value becomes available in the ui. This technique can avoid a trivial member variable that conveys a value set in runAsync to a value used in ui.

Does anyone know if there's a way to access CssRule properties? I'm passing a CssRule into a Fragment and using it to style some things, but I'd like access to a specific color variable used in the CssRule; otherwise I'll either have to hard-code the color in or have it passed in as another parameter, which I'd rather not do.

That sounds like a pretty huge code smell. CSS is for styling after the fact. It should not affect your applications logic.

Right now I'm trying to fix what WAS pretty gross styling code; the reason I'm hoping to access some colors separately from the whole stylesheet is because there's some elements of my UI that change on selection, so I'm changing the colors manually in a few places. It's not ideal, but it's way better than the hard-coding we had before 😛

don't those UI elements have selectors you can use for selection? e.g.,

.toggle-button:selected { -fx-color: my-new-color; }

Unfortunately the elements I'm working with are multiple elements strung together in a stackpane, so I'm having to, on selection, go through and re-color different elements in the stackpane. I sure wish there was a simple toggle, but the code I was given to work with is a little more convoluted than that. 😕

Can you a small program that demonstrates the recoloring operation?

@carlw, do you remember the chipView you helped me out with? Those are the elements I'm trying to re-color! 🙂 I can send a small program - just be aware it's not very pretty haha

I'm using the pseudo style for this custom selection coloring https://courses.bekwam.net/public_tutorials/bkcourse_tornadofx_selecting.html I missed a class in this post that I'll put below. My web site is in a shambles as I upgrade to Bootstrap 4 but I'll update the post as soon as it's upgraded.

@carlw Thanks so much - I think that might be just what I need! The code you provided before for the chipView was extremely helpful; I just got completely tangled up in the styling, so that's what's really messy right now 😛

IMO, css rules -- whether on the web or in tornadofx -- are best as a collection of static items rather than things that are defined on-the-fly. There's plenty of room for dynamic behavior (javacript, FX events) but a lot of times pseudo styles can be used that also follow a declarative (no logic to be tested) approach

@Kimberly H have you tried just adding/removing classes on certain actions that may not be covered by things like focus, hover, selected and so on

has anyone tried running tornadofx on mobile, by any chance?
