the documentation on Kotlin is really quite nice in general, but i feel like quite a few of the "new" concepts, at least for Java programmers, could really benefit from having a section that shows how useful they can be in tackling certain common patterns. Plenty of "how", but needs more "why".

The TornadoFX documentation has actually been pretty good about that I feel, so kudos to you and your team.

i think a cookbook would be a great site or document. i think the guide is best as a framework or design neutral document. as soon as you start to apply patterns, you're going to render them in something like MVC, MVVM, MVP etc. all of these are supported

you're right, a separate site/doc would be best (and to be clear i mean more Kotlin general, not tornado).. maybe a link to relevant parts from the main doc. But i'm thinking less architecture and more smaller patterns, For instance using class delegates for facade, or just overall typical java nonsense that everyone has come across, and how you could do it "the kotlin way". Theres just so many really interesting features that I think could get lost on the java convert, and where they could use it, will instead fall back on the java paradigm. 🙂 this is probably the wrong channel for this, i just meant it in reply to what Edvin and I talked about with the lamba outside the function call idiom being lost on me until i saw it in use in tornadofx's builders

we're not limited to tornadofx here especially because your app won't be just UI controls

Thanks @carlw - This ia a really nice guide - but the way I understood it, it covers styling in a css file. I do not yet see in this guide, how that allows to style rows depending on their content (rowItem)

I mean i see, that even and odd are possible - but maybe I'm missing the part where the tables content is referenced

In a TableView<T> where the T has an Observable Boolean T::boolprop, want do highlight the rows, if the rowItem.boolprop.value == true

Another topical ML video that uses TornadoFX

@iari Here's an example that styles both the row (highlighted yellow) and a particular cell (text is red). Use styles + cellFormat

Styling TableRow and Cell through cellFormat

The gist of the example is that the data indicates a date past due. If this condition is found when creating the cell (cellFormat), two styles are applied. One style is for the cell (textFilll=red) and one for the overall row (backgroundcolor=yellow). You also have to consider the cells are being recycled so you need to clean up any previously set styles. Also, empty cells have to be handled by this cellFormat

absolutely

i've done this a lot...customers ask for a red/green/yellow dot for a status in case the text is small. tooltip is good for accessiblity

custom editors like a color chooser too

Do you have a small sample of how that is setup? Google has been fruitless or im just not searching well enough

one simple way to do this is to override the "graphic" property which can be a general Node. the contents of the TableCell are a Label (by default). A Label has two properties: text which is almost always set and graphic. You can specify that the text not be shown and set the graphic to a Node like a Shape
