Whenever we add material to it, we should identify if it is "Getting started" material or "Appendix material". We want the body of the book to be for newcomers that walks through core functionality. Everything that does not fall into that category probably should fall into the Appendix.

I'll need to think about restructuring the Appendix to accomodate this growth.

I think things like the

rowExpander()

functionality should be core material since many have an immediate need for that, but advanced features like smart column resizing should be appendix material.

@thomasnield This sounds like a good plan. When I find new stuff I will mostly put it in the appendix, then we can move it if we feel it's something everybody should know.

@jonathan I'm looking for a way to provide a Cell decorator to ListView/TableView/TreeView and friends, so that you can install a cell factory that retrieves a cell from the original cell factory and delegate all calls to the original cell and just override

updateItem

after the original cell has done it's job. I had to give up due to private/final methods in Cell and the subclasses. Can you see a way to proxy these cells? It is very convenient to be able to augment an already existing cell, for example if you create a cell using the

CheckBoxTreeCell.forTreeView()

call and want to modify it a bit.

@carlw I looked briefly at the issues caused by introducing the ViewModel inside the Cell. The problem is that outside changes are not visible to the ViewModel unless it's flushed. That's kind of the point of the ViewModel, so it is probably a bad match for this use case. I suspect the best thing to do is to rebind the UI components for a cell when the item for that cell change, possibly using the new

ListCellFragment

. Once I'm back on my feet (literally) I will have a closer look at it.

Great! There is one thing I don't like.. when a TodoItem is completed you make a direct call to the MainView to get it to update it's label. I dislike the direct binding to MainView. Could it either fire a

TodoItemChanged

event or call something in the controller instead? And the label that calculates the total items might be a StringBinding.

@edvin I had a version that introduced an activeItemsProperty that used a StringBinding to produced the "# items left" Label This worked adding and removing items which notify the ObservableList. However, changing the contents of an item (completed checkbox) didn't fire a change even on the list, so the label wouldn't update as it does now. I considered trying to do something with Change.wasReplaced to get the ObservableList notified which would update the Label.

@edvin What do you think about pushing the Label property -- the String -- into the model? Then a change to the TodoItem updates the model and MainView binds its control to the data.

@carlw I think it would work if we could use the cell editing functionality in ListView, that would fire a ListChangeEvent upon commit. I don't know if that's possible with a FilteredList though, because it's not editable. If you want to put something in the model it should be an IntegerProperty, so that you can create a StringBinding from that perhaps?

Had tremendous difficulty with USB installation. Burned to a DVD+R and now it looks like I'm getting somewhere

I backed out of installing as I realized I'm using the Surface Pro 4 keyboard which still does not have drivers. Wasn't working with live boot. Ugh. I'll wait another 6 months.

Got Linux Mint 17.3 to work perfectly. With gestures and touchscreen and everything.

@edvin i added a property to keep a running count of the active items. it's working with the add and remove. i'm binding an expression "# items left" to the UI and calls to add() and remove() increase this. i'm having a problem with the completed edit. I was calling a handler to also decrement the items left, but I'm getting multiple calls of this handler. There seem to be a lot of ListCellFragments referencing the TodoItem and am applying my handler multiple times to the same TodoItem.
