@edvin not really, the guide seems to have covered the learning curve effectively. The styling chapter confused my colleague but that's only because it's obsolete and incomplete. They've bought into it pretty quickly otherwise. If you want to hear something fantastic, every fare on Southwest.com will be generated by a TornadoFX application by the end of the year : )

(Well, it's not a showstopper to actually use it, everything works great with Fragments, but for Views to be per-web-user we need this)

@carlw if you're referring to our operational systems, I wish. Airline systems obviously have legacy problems which I'm hoping to help tackle one day. But plenty of work is being done to replace our res system. Anyway Kotlin is being used for commercial strategy operations. I do think it has potential to be used elsewhere in the company, and it will be interesting to see what happens in the next two years.

@thomasnield os/390 runs java and kotlin doesn’t need the latest. doubt TornadoFX would look too good without a Curses implementation

Haha if you want to read a fascinating book check out Hard Landing. A lot of it revolves around American Airlines pioneering reservation systems with Sabre and all the drama that took place. Crandall is essentially the Steve Jobs of commercial aviation. It's crazy how Airlines were one of the cutting edge adopters of business technology, and because of it we are now left with notorious legacy problems.

It depends on the product. A lot of Airlines are connected to Sabre in some way

I have many personal sentiments on why these problems happen, but I'm sure I signed an NDA or something that prevents me from expressing them publicly. But I'm optimistic where things are going now.

me too. i think getting the word out about kotlin (and tornadofx) will help with a grassroots understanding which might get some pilots off the ground

Haha well played. That is something I'm hoping to do heavily in the next year, both at Southwest and at O'Reilly. It's amazing how technology knowledge gets siloed, we can't let that happen.

when i got my mba, i got some real insight into how managers think. i think the sweet spot for kotlin will be that it won’t be a manager’s decision to adopt the technology the way it might have been with Scala That is, if the manager has to staff a project with rare Scala developers to bring all the benefits of the language, that might be a showstopper. If Kotlin’s interop is really good, then a technical lead with some clout can bring it in as though it were a shared library

Its funny you mention that. Scala is pretty established in the data science community as the JVM language for data science, mostly due to Apache Spark. And yet few data professionals accustomed to Python can learn it. I did pitch Kotlin as an alternative for Scala, but the Chief Data Science Officer at OReilly thinks it's too soon. I am going to wait until next year after Kotlin gains traction, and at the moment am doing a Reactive Python for Data class.

I'm going to pivot my blog also to showcase TornadoFX, Kotlin, Apache Spark, and data science integrated together. There's a huge gap between data science and software engineering, and I think this stack will close it.
