I’m thinking about a logo for the project and came up with this idea. Let me know if you get the analogy 🙂
colors to be designed, the shape comes first

Anyone? 👍 or 👎?
v
Let me know if you get the analogy
Do you just mean that it is made from two Kotlin logos, that you probably are not allowed to use like that? 😄
p
It's just a cat, Björn!
a
oooh a cat. I was wondering all of yesterday what the ‘analogy’ was! I thought maybe the bottom looked like an W? Or it kind of looked like an origami?
p
it’s a analogy for GitHub’s cat in their logo 🙂 hmm, maybe I should add some cat eyes or some other feature that would help recognizing it. On the other hand, I like this simplicity and my wife immediately recognized the cat and didn’t see Kotlin logos until I told her
a
ahh I see, it’s kind of like this logo, but made up of the Kotlin K?
p
yes!
a
I really like that idea, I did something similar for Dokkatoo :) https://github.com/adamko-dev/dokkatoo/blob/main/docs/images/banner.svg
do you see the similarity with it? 😄
p
I definitely see some relation with the previous Kotlin logo, but I’m still wondering what’s this white shape at the bottom 🤔 probably some animal?
ah, an elephant from Gradle!
love it
v
I'm always hesitant with such similarities, just to avoid problems. Or at least get the official permission. But I'm a coward. :-D
a
haha no, we have the same problem with our logos apparently. It’s supposed to be a cockatoo bird
v
Just wanted to say that actually :-D
p
@Vampire I know what you mean, and I’m aware that certain uses of Kotlin logo are forbidden. Here, however, we have a debatable situation. Before going v1.0, I’m probably going to ask JetBrains if they find it too closely related to the original logo, maybe a small adjustment will do the job
v
Looks like a parrot, I was about to type
p
@Adam S sorry, I didn’t know the word cockatoo so my brain didn’t recognize the similarity 😄 (in Polish: kakadu, I should have recognized it!)
a
haha it’s okay, I know it’s not that recognisable. It needs a redesign, perhaps make the beak a bit more obvious
I’m always laughing to myself about the name Dokkatoo though. It’s like Dokka, 2. But also it’s a like a cockatoo bird. Love it
p
BTW, do you know that you can tell GitHub to render two different pictures for light and dark theme? see https://github.com/typesafegithub/github-workflows-kt/blob/main/README.md
v
Just don't wait too long. It needed very long until Spock had a good logo. So if they object, you might want to have a plan B, other than releasing without logo. 😄

Yes 🙂
a
anyway, for the ghwf-kt logo I would perhaps try and make the triangles smaller, so you’d end up with a version of the GitHub logo that looks like tessellated Kotlin K’s. Or at least, something that keeps those distinctive ears - I think it’s a good idea to use the Kotlin K as ears
p
I appreciate the feedback! I’ll ponder at it and share v2 here
a
my other feedback would be: good work on using a SVG, they are my favourite.
p
not yet, thanks for letting me know
a
I’m kind of imagining penrose tiles, but made up of K’s, in the shape of GitHub cat… if that makes any sense https://www.google.com/search?q=penrose+tiles&tbm=isch#imgrc=BBUG3gs-5knuvM
v
Let dall-e generate something 😄
a
ooh yeah, just ask for a merge between Kodee 📌 and the GitHub logo
you’d probably end up with a cronenberg monster though…
p
I tried with stable-diffusion but it produced some random stuff
if you are signed up at DALL-E, feel free to try out a prompt like “GitHub logo drawn with little Kotlin logos” or sth similar 😄
oh, DALL-E is paid already 😓
v
Hm, then maybe Midjouney or how it was called?
p
also not free anymore
v2 draft - I don’t like the lengthy head but if I remove the “squares” second from the top, it doesn’t resemble the Kotlin logo anymore:
or:
v
If you adjust the aligning, the latter might be nice if JB doesn't mind 🙂
p
I’m wondering if there should be some margins between the triangles, or if I should join them. Merged below. Thoughts?
v
If you don't add color it might look a bit bulky compared to the other.
Except you don't like the additional Tangram reference
Which could refer to building a workflow from building blocks 😄
p
I’m sold to the tangram thing
a
ahh looks nice, much more like an animal
I like it with the margins
maybe it should have margins in the body/head, but not in the ears - then that emphasises the K subtly
p
Will try it
v
There is no margin in the ears
p
BTW, just looked up tangram cat in Google and they are pretty complicated right? Use non-uniform sizes of triangles as well
So I think we'll stay with the overall shape, it's simple and elegant
v
Yes, definitely. In tangram you only have those tiles.
image.png
And you are given the shape you should build and then try to do it with those tiles.
About 2500 years old game
p
Got it, thanks!
a
yeah I think varying the sizes of the triangles might be nice, and give a little more flexibility
p
I'll play with this, but my brain has already converged to some local maximum and it will be hard for me to see a little variation as something nicer :D
So feel free to propose something
v
Just that I was not misunderstood. I did not suggest that. The same-sized triangles might look nicer and simpler which is most often better for a logo. They nevertheless reminded me of tangram and how you build a figure from building blocks.
a
that looks cool. I like how the gaps make the head look a bit more like a jaw/snout
the triangles are transparent, so you can see underneath. This might bit a bit annoying if you want to put the logo on a coloured background, because it could ‘bleed through’ and make the gaps less visible. Maybe make the triangles fill white on the dark logo, and black on the light logo?
p
I thought about it. I generally agree, but it has one disadvantage: if the background is something else than black or white (e.g. in the docs https://typesafegithub.github.io/github-workflows-kt/), it will look a bit ugly. I think it’s fair for now to assume these known usages/contexts (README and docs), and once it’s needed to use the logo somewhere else, it may need to be tweaked
yay, we have JetBrains’ approval 💪
thanks all for feedback 🙂
a
hey 👋 hijacking this old thread because I updated the Dokkatoo logo so I wanted to ask if it’s more recognisable, especially since you know the answer now(!) https://github.com/adamko-dev/dokkatoo/blob/main/docs/images/banner.svg
p
Yes, much better now :) could you consider using the new color scheme from Kotlin logo? This one is from the previous version
a
that’s intentional, I like the older colours more :)
p
Ok! That's fine, I like it actually more when I realize it's a parrot-like bird, it needs more colors! :)
