I agree they conflict, I've also seen the "We want to gather all this data all the time, even though we'll probably never utilize it," from the perspective of an app developer, where putting in analytics on lots of random things can be somewhat time consuming if the management team never actually does anything with it. So if GDPR cuts back on the "datamine all the things" mentality that's a nice side-effect.
