We used Scala in the 2.7/2.8 days (that migration was horrendous) and went to a lot of Scala conferences and events in the SF Bay Area and the "functional purity" folks -- like ScalaZ -- were very off-putting to a lot of the "better Java" attendees back then. We abandoned Scala when 2.9 was in progress because they still had terrible binary compatibility issues and we couldn't face another migration.
