Z-Wave isn't so bad anymore. There are a lot more devices now thanks to the recent wave of consumer hubs like SmartThings. SmartThings is also nice because it lets you mix-and-match Z-Wave, ZigBee, and Wi-Fi, and doesn't really care what type a device is. This is also true of home-assistant and OpenHAB though
