I never had a strong opinion on the "closed by default" decision, but always thought it was somewhat opinionated, and antithetical to Kotlin's design goals, which are in general driven by pragmatism rather than theory. It is one of only a handful of decisions that I can't justify with "because it's useful"... instead it's just "the 'right' way". Nobody's going to tell you "I wish all my libraries' classes were `final`"...
