@dalexander: Yes, convincing children to work hard to understand math is very difficult. You just don’t have the maturity to understand why it’s important at the time, and by the time you’re grown up and you realize how important it was, your brain is awfully out of shape and the task looks daunting. Same thing if you go on a jog for the first time after ten years.
