Poor at-derek always gets messages meant for me (at-dalexander) =p But the way many people in the US learn math is through memorizing recipes for solving problems. While I think some of that is a side-effect of the way it is taught, I think there’s a certain proportion of the population who would have a very difficult time understanding the concepts well enough to apply them to not-math.
