There's a lot to be said for a little bit of exposure in school. I always say that my most important course ever was my college's equivalent of CS101. Because I went into that class expecting programming to be "flipping the bits on the machine", and when they showed us how to write for loops in Java and whatnot, I was like "oh, okay, this isn't as insane as I thought it would be". After that course, I honestly was basically self-taught, because my college was god-awful and continued to pander to failing students in higher-level courses, so we literally didn't even learn what a HashMap was at any point in my education
