There was a study in the UK where pupils learned programming. Then they wrote spelling tests with a group of pupils that learned programming and with one that didn't. The group that learned programming was better in the spelling tests. That's probably because those who learned programmed where intresting in fixing the errors (bugs), because they did the same during programming (debugging).
