I'd never say that Scala didn't bring a lot to the table. They definitely did. But the language seems like an experiment to me, not a pragmatic, useful, easy to understand tool. Kotlin is obviously very inspired by Scala, but I think it's a good example of cutting the fat away and just keeping what's actually useful
