try the low-power mode, while it turns off most IDE-features it does drastically reduce overhead. you can also try deactivating / uninstalling all plugins you're not using and maybe deactivate some other IDE-features. but IntelliJ being a resource hog is not a kotlin problem, it's a "I'm the most feature-rich IDE on this planet, and I'm written in Java" problem
