the only thing that springs to mind that might be related is that we still have an issue whereby intellij/gradle-compiled classes get mixed together somehow .... we don't normally notice it except when someone has used the internal keyword, and then it seems IJ and gradle-triggered compiles see different module names so they mangle the names differently
