Setting static final fields is a terrible idea. static finals are treated as constants by the JVM and it will aggressively inline them. Moreover static final fields of compile time constants (const val in Kotlin) will inlined by the compiler, which is what you are seeing in your 2nd example.
If you want to change a field, do not make it final.
