Because Kotlin tends to be Java++ and only started taking advantage of features which plain Java is still far away from. But both Kotlin and Java share same OOP, VM and Memory Management principles, though in Kotlin they are buried under syntax sugar. So, Java is a better start if you then going to use Kotlin.
