Usually if I don't find the question or comments offensive outright and I think that googling or stackoverflow may be helpful, and I have couple of minutes of free time I will google and check SO myself post a link and comment that it would've been appropriate for the OP to have done that themselves before asking the question here, or if the question is irrelevant - that, I try to be polite and understanding.
Unfortunately I don't have data to confirm that this approach works, but I'm hopeful 🙂
I also do not suggest everyone do that, I understand time constraints, sometimes I don't have time to do that too, in those circumstances I've been training myself to just ignore the message as I think that is better than telling the person off, as it at least does not elicit negative posts like the one that started this discussion.
All of the above is just my attitude and humble opinion 🙂
