My curiosity is also raised by finding out how does one grow a community around a programming language, why some succeed and other don’t.

I would say that JUGs are still the largest, followed by Clojure and then Scala. Last year was the first Java Conference in Cape Town, small imo with under 100 attendees. But that conference will move to Johannesburg and will be much larger (bigger city).
