It combines with “current” value of upstream, if it's delivered during synchronous subscription process, like by subscribing to subject or hot/cold observable that emits value in current thread synchronously.

We have tests for these operators and use it in few places in production that are also covered with tests, so I can’t agree with “it doesn’t make sense” 🙂
