I've had to work with one of the worst pieces of software in existence: wordpress. Their main focus is plugins and it reminds me of gradle. When they have a new requirement, wordpress users throw plugins at the problem to avoid programming. It can be hard to make a system work well when it is composed of parts that must work together without knowing what others are doing. Debugging gets really messy.
