I think supporting mixed java/kotlin in the same source root is mandatory, because people can start with a full java project, migrate to kobalt to try it, and then gradually migrate their java to kotlin in the same place. Also, sometimes Java is still needed for interop with some frameworks, and it feels natural just to keep them in one set.
