I posted that link thinking there might be something there that could provide ideas for compiling mixed projects. I tried ant on my mixed project and while it doesn't perform magic, it has the advantage that only one project need be defined. As far as I can tell it simply compiles all kotlin files first and then all java files. The disadvantage is that more of us clueless people would not know what to expect.
