so improvements there pay off.  We should not use SO to build individual reputation there, but rather to build content for the community that stays correct and current.  There is no requirement in SO that you leave things broken due to historical correctness.  Also in “meta” it is common to say the community owns the answers.  So if people receive comments they should incorporate the changes if they are inline with the topic and answer.  Most people don’t unfortunately.
