there is currently an ongoing discussion in the scijava ecosystem about which solution to target for the next dev cycle (JVM, Python, JavScript and WebAssembly). GraalVM, Kotlin Multiplatform, Rust or Julia I'm obviously rooting for Kotlin, but if someone more expert (I'm looking at you, @altavir, for example) wanna jump in, he's more than welcome to do it

Thanks for the heads up. I will try to look into it a little bit later (but I am not sure I will have time today). It seems it is about imaging. Kotlin is a good candidate since there is a lot of libraries already available in Java. Python is OK for small things, but it becomes harder and harder to do large scale projects on it. Build reproduceability is also a problem. Julia does not look good because it is lacking in communication field.
