To be honest, I think the gridpane builder in TornadoFX is a mess. Not sure who created the functions for it (I created the row, but not the constraints), but I don't feel at home with it at all and don't quite understand the reasoning for how it is structured, but you can just use the static functions to set col/rowspan, just like you do in FXML.
