The Kotlin compiler incorporates pieces of the IntelliJ Platform code, which is used both when running from the CLI and inside IntelliJ IDEA. That code has certain JDK 9 incompatibilities at this time. As far as I know, the IntelliJ team does plan to address those incompatibilities.
