@jimn before we polute channel even further with speculations, please look at kotlinx.serialization specification: https://github.com/Kotlin/kotlinx.serialization/blob/master/docs/runtime_usage.md#protobuf. It was made exactly for the purpose of easy packing and unpacking textual and binary transport formats. It supports protobuf out of the box and some other formats as plugins.
