Personally, i'd love to find a common ground that can work for the matlab type users and the abstract algebra type users, if one exists. i've seen fragmentation in other communities' scientific libraries (in particular, D) cause library and dependency issues, and i think one of the reasons that python took off is because numarray and numeric were able to merge.
