it's nice that there is a elvis operator to branch on null. after all JNZ goes back to 8 bit assembler instructions. except that you have to have a nullable return type to use the language operator which means that you also have to be mindful of where the compiler expects "line noise" like "!!" and "?" in code that would otherwise not have nulls
