clickonce doesn't seem to support background updates when the app is not running, which is a critical requirement for me. one of the problems runtimes tend to have is that in the early days there aren't many apps for them, so users don't start them very often, so they get old and insecure. then the user finds a use for it at some point, maybe running the app they used before.
