The short answer is that I 100% agree with you, but (1) I'm not yet sure what the API we expose should look like, as it opens pandora's box in terms of potentially bad ecosystem consequences and (2) it is clearly a post-1.0 feature as we need to get this current version stabilized and usable for folks.
