Afaik those Icons (<http://Icons.Default.Menu|Icons.Default.Menu> etc) are generated by a script right? Is it possible to make the scripts generate Painters instead of ImageVectors / are there plans to do so? I do not know the underlying classes at all, but that would be a bit more coherent with other Drawables.
