For what it's worth, I created a new project > empty compose activity > updated the pre-defined kotlin_version field to 1.4.10, and then set kotlinCompilerVersion kotlin_version and everything worked fine.

Created a bug for the kotlinCompilerVersion to use the kotlin_version out of the box. https://issuetracker.google.com/issues/168225750
