Please stop spamming ads all the time. It's really enough by now!
r
You can hide people in Slack. That's what I did. I would prefer for them to be banned obviously.
s
How can you hide people in Slack?
s
Oh nice, this feature must be new. Thanks for mentioning it. But it still displays as "This message is hidden". I vote for a ban of this person.
s
Oh I see it too, definitely a new feature! Good to know in any case!
s
But at least the hide function will prevent notifications. πŸ™‚
l
I vote for a ban of this person.
I think it's not even a monitored account. utm_campaign=weekly
@marcinmoskala What's your position?
Is this really the way to promote your books?
s
I will not buy any because of this.
l
Same. It's crossed the line by a lot

Hi everyone, I see you are very upset with my last post and I don't understand why you want to block my account. Most of the time I post articles that provide insight or/ and explanation of topics that interest many Kotlin developers. If you don't read them it doesn't mean others also skip them. Have a look at my posts from the past few months, they are very well-embraced by the community. Regarding the posts about the "get an ebook" I received messages (in kotlinlang slack) to inform the community once we have availability to download an ebook for free once you bought the hard copy of a book by @marcinmoskala. We released this so-called "promotion" yesterday and so I sent an informative post according to the demand of some of the people gathered here. If anyone who opted to block my account felt offended by this "promotion" I have to admit that it was never my or Marcin's intention to spam this slack. If you don't like the content, tell me and we can discuss it, change it or even decide to not publish it. To block the account that provides valuable content 99% of the time is way too aggressive. I think Marcin articles give a lot to the community and it would be a shame to ban completely the possibility of sharing them.

We just don't want ads. It doesn't matter if only 10% of your posts are ads. I don't want them at all here. And you have been asked several times to stop this, but you don't seem to understand. That's why I want you blocked.

Good, let the people know who actually asked about this. Not me.

I don’t think doubling down is the right approach here? You can argue that some articles are informative, but this one in particular was a straight up ad, which provided absolutely no value to anyone clicking the link. You can create your own mail list, or add a link to the book at the end of the informative articles etc. But this is clearly not well received by anyone here, why double down?

And please, don't patronize us. Nobody is offended by "a promotion", and nobody is offended with informative posts. Of course we recognize that articles are helpful to the community. That's why we recognize quickly that what you are doing is the opposite with a disguise

@Stylianos Gakis https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Streisand_effect all the way down

Fully agree here. He wants to promote the Kt.Academy, but this shines a very bad light on it.

I now feel that the content produced by @marcinmoskala can't be that good, if it needs such aggressive promotion. 🫠 Good content usually sells itself. At least I don't see O'Reilly agents post ads for the head first book series every day. πŸ˜„

I understand that you don't want ads on slack, that's why I don't post them here, we have different channels for it. If you consider some of my posts as ads I will reevaluate them and won't post them here anymore. But don't expect me to don't say anything when I see comments like " I vote to ban this person". You left a public comment so it means you are open for an open discussion where I can explain my motives and get to know yours. That's all.

This space is for Kotlin developers. If a Kotlin developer find one of these "articles" interesting, they might share it here anyway. You're not a Kotlin developer, you're just doing advertising.
βž• 2
s
Are you implying
<https://kt.academy/article/books-for-photos?utm_source=slack&utm_medium=promotion&utm_campaign=weekly>
is not an ad? With the
utm_medium=promotion&utm_campaign=weekly
appended in there and everything. If it is not an ad, what is it? I’m really curious to see what you would qualify this as exactly

Yeah by being developers we kinda know what UTMs are… It feels like you're trying to convince people your ads are not ads but you have the wrong audience for that

They ARE ads. Please consider to not post anything here. This channel is for developers and you are none. You are a "Business Development Manager". You don't have any business here.
s
No need to get personal on each other here. You can criticise the actions of people, but no reason to get heated over something like this.
πŸ‘ 3
s
Yes, indeed. You are right. πŸ™
r
I find claiming these posts are not ads very insulting
βž• 2
h
That's right I am not a Kotlin developer but Marcin Moskala (whose articles I share here) is. I use UTM to know if what I do actually make sense, to be more precise, to know if people here and in other places actually are interested in what I post.
s
Right, so could you please comment here what you would consider this post to be if not an ad?
βž• 1
r
You don't need tracking when you're a developer sharing a cool article or a cool lib. This is what we do here.

to know if people here and in other places actually are interested in what I post.
I think all the 🚫 reactions to your posts should give you a good idea.

Yes I saw it under one article and so it didn't appear anymore.

s
I saw it on many articles. Please, don't act this way... I really try to not get heated. πŸ™„
r
Bad faith like this is also insulting.

s
Indeed. Thank you for expressing my feelings. πŸ™‚
h
Ok, thank you for the feedback then. I will not post anything that could be considered ads here, only valuable content. Can we agree on that?
s
Yes that would be optimal. Just as mentioned here https://kotlinlang.slack.com/archives/C0BJ0GTE2/p1699454490580899?thread_ts=1699432200.656009&cid=C0BJ0GTE2, a link at the end of an already informative article by itself is no harm imo

In general I consider the best way to advertise something is by releasing free parts of it. Excerpts of a book qualify for that. For me as a developer Cash App has the very best promotion due to the great libraries like OkIO, Retrofit & Wire Square released in the past. πŸ˜„
Certainly, Touchlab stands out in my thoughts thanks to their valuable contributions. If ever I were to contemplate seeking professional assistance and guidance, my first choice for reaching out would be them, not influenced by any advertisement they might have run.
