To all the not kotlin but kotlin colored emoji users... maybe just leave the android channel? I think it's reasonable to expect that all the sub channels will have a lot of content related to their namesake
not kotlin but kotlin colored 6

I just noticed the channel description "Avoid not kotlin but kotlin colored" pardon my stupid ass but I genuinely don't know if refers to 1. avoiding the use of the emoji, or 2. avoiding discussion that aren't Kotlin related ๐Ÿ˜‚

lol... i hadn't considered that interpretation ๐Ÿ˜…

@Christopher Mederos Could you please avoid calling other channel members "spammers", especially if they pointed out on off-topic messages. Please check Code of Conduct and Guidelines of this community which you confirmed when joined it:

Please remember this is a Slack team for Kotlin. If you have generic questions that are about a technology (which may or may not be used with Kotlin), maybe it's better to use another forum, such as StackOverflow.
Also specifically section about this channel:

#android. Using Kotlin for Android development (consider to use StackOverflow or other communities for generic Android question not directly related to Kotlin, even if you use Kotlin for Android development).

Hey @gildor - just raising it as a concern, since this particular channel has a very different "culture" about what off-topic means. In particular, it is rare to see the emoji in most other channels, whereas here it is attached to almost every post. I think the emoji has a fairly passive aggressive tone, and it's not exactly a welcoming or constructive way to express that something might be off-topic. also - I've removed "spammers" from my original post, as to not upset anyone further
Otherwise, in 2024 I'm struggling to think of a kotlin related android question that wouldn't largely be about something in the android sdk? ๐Ÿ˜…

> since this particular channel has a very different "culture" about what off-topic means It's not a matter of culture, it's explicitly written in the rules of the community This channel is different because of large amount of users, popular topic and as result large amount of. off-topic questions. Your question was off-topic because it's not related to Kotlin There is a channel to discuss policies of this Slack: #meta Questions about #android raised there a few times, and result always the same: Non-Kotlin related questions are off-topic in this community except #random > attached to almost every post They attached not to all posts, because not all questions are off-topics > kotlin related android question that wouldn't largely be about something in the android sdk Android SDK is not a topic here, topic is Android-related Kotlin questions. Yes, many questions could be asked in other channels, it doesn't mean that there are no other questions,, you can find multiple instances of such questions if check history here. I understand that it could be restrictive, but just allowing any topic not related to Kotlin is not what this Slack community for

well I've now read through the history of threads here and in #meta and see its a comically reoccurring issue... so i suppose this one is just another to add to the pile ๐Ÿคฆ it's nice to know the graddle chanel has similar struggles at least ๐Ÿ˜…
g
What kind of "pile"? What would be your suggestion?
c
After reading all the other threads, it seems like a debate that will keep on happening. The scope of android related kotlin discussions that aren't covered by one of the other channels is so narrow. Yet, the popularity of this slack and the significance of kotlin to android means there will be a lot of people wanting to discuss it here. Honestly, I think JetBrains should just open a channel for android discussions explicitly. They already make the core of Android Studio and the language that's used for writing native Android apps... might as well throw in a slack as well??
As a developer using KMP and kotlin everything... it is nice having 90% of my tech stack discussed in one place
k
That's what the Android United slack server is for and that's why this channel topic up top suggests it. This problem is also in the #server channel but it's definitely the worst in this channel. People post random android questions directly under an explanation of what this channel is for which to me is hilarious ๐Ÿ˜‚ It's like you go into a room in real life and don't bother seeing what people are talking about and then start talking about Bitcoin or porn or pizza. ๐Ÿค” There's also the #meta channel if you want to take it up with the server maintainers. But this slack server is named kotlinlang.slack.com..... Not android-united.slack.com....
c
I mean... most people are writing android code IN kotlin. The answer to many questions likely involves some code using android-ktx. So I wouldn't say it's as egregious as your example
The topic says "Using Kotlin to write Android Apps..." - is it so strange to ask how to write some kotlin code to do something in android?
g
Also most people write Kotlin code with keyboard, It doesn't mean that we need a channel for this
c
I gather you guys think the problem is that people don't read the channel topic... i think its more complicated than that. (as evidenced by the 20 threads about this topic ๐Ÿ˜…)
k
Have you watched the channel? Someone just cross posted about finding an android job.... In multiple channels. Nothing related to kotlin ๐Ÿ˜‚
c
The test of relevancy you're mentioning doesn't hold up in any of the channels by those standards. Is asking about layouts in #compose off topic unless it's also about some kotlin specific behaviour like flows?
g
Compose is Kotlin-only UI fromework, as result it's totally on topic, Additionally, any Kotlin library is welcome to have a channel here

It maybe worth compiling a list of other up to date resource locations to help people locate better places for there questions. A few other resources Iโ€™ve seen are pretty dead nowadays, android United is ghost town and that android chat seems to be dead.
