Can’t help it, but Apples new „private cloud compute“ sounds like bullshit to me. „Cloud“ and „privacy“ are opposites to me. All the years Apple said that users data must be processed on-device and never leave the device. And I agreed with that. Now they tell us they can protect our privacy while sending data to the cloud - maybe even ChatGPT. I don’t buy it. Do you?

Corporate is pretty tone deaf to anything that is not going to help raise their stock prices.
I really wish the concept of a stock market did not exist.

My very rudimentary understanding was that they have on-device models and then there's an opt-in feature for if the model can't figure something out to forward it to chatgpt or whatever else. Not sure if that's what you're highlighting tho

In addition to that ☝️ they are supposed to ask permission before sending data to third party servers.

@dewildte not to get political per se, but I think the solution is really just better regulation for those big companies around false claims etc. Make the game harder for them to play so that doing the "right" thing is the most profitable too. Of course it isn't foolproof though, but it's that "swiss cheese" defense model: every layer you add increases the effectiveness of the regulations

Agreed I do not want to get political either. I stay away from politics. I think I am just feeling the effects of being jobless for months on end now. It’s hard not to just hate the whole damn construct at this point.

@Youssef Shoaib [MOD] In the keynote it wasn’t fully clear to me if it will always ask as soon as it can’t be done on-device or if it will only ask for third party. Of course I hope that cloud processing will be an opt-in, but chances are that it’s transparent to the user. I suspect Apple doesn’t want this „sorry, but I don’t know that“ experience Alexa gives me.
I use ChatGPT a lot, so I’m not against cloud services. I just want to stay in control. When interacting with ChatGPT I only write the data I want to share into the prompt. Apple will send personal data as context that they surely won’t preview to me (for the better user experience). 👀
